Latin School of Chicago Board Chair Dara Milner and Vice Chair Carrie Parr Announce Head of School Thomas Hagerman to Depart at Year’s End

Message from the Board of Trustees

 Dear Latin Community,

We are writing to announce that Thomas Hagerman has decided to step down from his role as Head of School at the end of the school year. Thomas has asked that we share the following message with all of you:

“I wanted to share with all of you that, after considerable reflection, I have decided to step away from my role at Latin at the end of this schoiol year.

This decision comes after a great deal of thoughtful deliberation. As the year has unfolded, I have been repeatedly reminded about the importance of attending more intentionally to my health and overall sustainability. Stepping away at the end of the year allows me to do so in a way that is responsible, while also ensuring continuity and care for the work of the Latin community during this transition. I am deeply grateful for the relationships, collaboration, and shared purpose that have defined the past four years, and I take real pride in what we have accomplished together in service of our students and community.

Thank you for your partnership and for the many ways you have and continue to show up for our students and broader community every day. I am apopreciative of all we have built together, and i wish each of you continued growth and success in the promising future ahead.”

We would like to express our gratitude to Thomas and are grateful for his dedication to Latin and for all that he has accomplished. He is leaving the School well-positioned for the future, academically, financially and as a community.

We will begin a national search for Thomas’s successor in the coming weeks. In addition, we will be working collaboratively with Thomas and our Senior Administrative Team on a transition plan to guide the School during this period and are planning for an interim Head of School for the 2026-27 school year.

Please join us in thanking Thomas for his dedication to Latin and wishing him good health and all the best.

LATIN SCHOOL OF CHICAGO INVESTIGATION LETTER

In a letter sent from the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, families of the Latin School of Chicago are calling on the Board of Trustees to address serious misconduct that has gone unaddressed at the school for too long.

The letter details our concerns that certain current and past officers and trustees of the school have persistently failed to discharge their fiduciary duties, resulting in serious physical and mental harm to students and causing possibly irreversible harm to the reputation and financial sustainability of this once highly respected institution. We are also calling for a fully transparent and independent investigation, which is necessary to fully address misconduct at the Latin School and to restore both its reputation and its ability to deliver on its charitable mission.

If you are a former or current student, a parent, or a former employee or trustee, we need your help. We ask that you read the letter, included below, and use the contact button on this website to provide any helpful information in this effort.
